Oscar the Alsatian, Corgi, Cocker Spaniel, and Basset Hound mix is the first dog to have traveled the world so extensively. Waiting at a shelter home in Capetown, Oscar the pup received a second life just a day before he was supposed to be put down. Clearly his rescue by Joanne Lefson was a miracle and today Oscar is responsible for raising global awareness for the 475 million homeless dogs. On 2nd May, 2009, The World Woof Tour began with the team traveling 31 countries across 150,000 kms in 9 months! With Oscar along, the team visited 66 animal welfare centres and met over 20,000 shelter dogs.
This lovable dog traveled to the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Pyramids, Great Wall, Machu Pichu and so many more amazing destinations. You can visit the adorable Oscar’s World Woof Tour to check out the various stamps on Oscar’s passport.
Now here comes the sad news- Oscar met a tragic end on January 13th, 2013 when he got hit by a car in California. It is truly heartbreaking! The cute pictures make you wish his journey had continued a bit longer. Oscar’s short but very adventurous second life makes me think that Oscar’s little furry soul was meant to touch hundreds, thousands and millions lives across the world. Through his memories this beautiful message will continue to be carried forward. If you are looking to get a pet- Please adopt a shelter dog!
Memorial services will be held in Capetown on January 25th, 2013.
I’m just so glad that sweet little Oscar managed to live the life that most of us will only dream of living! Apart from the images below, I really recommend checking out the World Woof Tour website for more adorable images! I’m not able to share them here.
